A few years ago, my daughter decided to give her poor Mother a unique 80th birthday present, three sessions of help from an organizing specialist. I knew it was a good idea and that I desperately needed help, even though my own work history related to organizing various tasks for many different work environments. I did keep saying I wished I could hire the old me; somehow that is what was accomplished although Kathleen Green is stronger than I was and definitely more patient.
Kathleen helped me get a better grip on finishing things at the time, getting rid of what I did not need (she was very understanding of my need to keep things because ‘I might need that someday so why should I buy another?’ — responding to that question with ‘If you have not used it in a year, then it owns you, you don’t own it.’) She never made fun of me or criticized me but I came to see that I was ridiculous in many ways.
So when faced with an impossible task a few years later, I called Kathleen and asked for her help in getting rid of four floors worth of stuff, mine and others left in the building in the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s. I was the caretaker of a building where no one before me threw anything out either and I was going to move to another state and did not want to leave it for anyone else to have to deal with as well. It was an impossible task but I knew that would not slow Kathleen down.
It was done efficiently and we definitely both enjoyed ourselves in the process. We trashed so much stuff that we had a truck service come multiple times, knowing that they would go through what they trucked away to see if there was anything to go to Salvation Army, et cetera, so nothing would be wasted.
There is no way I could have done this building clearing alone even if I had years to accomplish it; there is no way I could have done it with even four helpers. It was Kathleen who set the pace and drove the effort. If I tired, she would sit me down, hand me a box and ask me to pick out what I wanted to keep; I would forget I was tired and become very involved in the task she set me. We did it in record time and I am proud of both of us.
I recommend Kathleen wholeheartedly and promise you that you will not regret it. She will listen to you, respect you and work with you, all the while she educates you about what has been holding you back, putting you in the condition that makes you need her help. And that teaching works as I am not the person I was with regards to things before working with her. I admire her skills and her work ethic and her ability to get someone like me, ill and weak and surrounded by things, to get moving and be glad to have fewer things in the end.
If anyone in the area of Philadelphia needs a home organizer, if they are also smart, they will choose you. There are probably many within the area that have training and are skillful but few, anywhere, have your genius for asking the right questions, carefully listening and then allowing the one in need to see the wisdom of what you are saying and appreciating being heard. Also, your magic for compromise, teaching the client how to keep less of something that truly matters and is really unnecessary. You are one of the best choice I ever made and I had to clean up 50 years of collecting while hating to throw anything away (but I might NEED it someday). You are one very gentle yet very strong lady and I am proud to have made you my friend.
